Fort Keogh 1888-1896

 

 

The following photos are from the National Archives, Record Group 111
Records of the Office of the Chief Signal Officer 1860 – 1985.

All are identifed by NARA as being of the 22nd Infantry.

They were taken at, or near Fort Keogh, Montana, when the 22nd Infantry
was stationed there from May 1888 to June 1896.

The 22nd Infantry soldiers have the Infantry bugle on the front of their caps
The 10th Cavalry soldiers have the Cavalry crossed sabers on the front of their caps

The trapdoor Springfield rifles date the photo as pre-1892/1893
but the brick building can't be confirmed as being at Fort Keogh

"Hunting party of the 22nd Infantry, Fort Keogh"
While the officer at the far right has a trapdoor Springfield rifle,
the rest of the party have the Springfield carbine,
which was issued to Cavalry and not Infantry,
which makes the identification of 22nd Infantry suspect

The handwritten caption on the photo reads:
"Barracks of "H" co. 22nd Inf. destroyed at Kiog by fire."
The Returns of the 22nd Infantry Regiment for December 1894 have this entry:
"The Barracks, occupied by Companies A and B, 22nd Infantry, at Fort Keogh, Montana,
were totally destroyed by fire in the morning of December 30, 1894, Cause unknown.
A considerable amount of property was destroyed."

The resolution of the original photograph is high enough to clearly distinguish
the number 22 underneath the crossed rifles on two of the soldiers' haversacks.
The Krag rifles indicate this photo was taken 1893-1896.
