AWARD OF THE ARMY COMMENDATION MEDAL FOR HEROISM

GOSKI, JOHN W. SPECIALIST FOUR E-4 United States Army
HHC, 1st Bn, 22d Inf, 4th Inf Div, APO 96262
Awarded: Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device
Date action: 15 February 1967
Theater: Republic of Vietnam

Reason:
For heroism in connection with military operations against a
hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, on February 15, 1967.
Specialist Four Goski distinguished himself while serving as a
switchboard operator with the Communications Platoon, Headquar-
ters Company, 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry. When the 1st Bat-
talion, 22d Infantry's Trains Area came under an enemy mortar
attack, Specialist Four Goski, the senior switchboard operator,
was off duty. When he heard the incoming rounds he immediately,
with complete disregard for the bursting mortar rounds, went to
the switchboard tent and told the man on duty to leave and seek
cover in the nearest bunker and that he would continue the op-
erations. The mortar rounds were landing in close proximity of
his location but he continued to operate the switchboard. Spec-
ialist Four Goski displayed his professional knowledge by main-
taining communications with the battalion and the next higher
and adjacent units. He called all sectors to alert them of
the mortar attack and to obtain an estimate of damage that oc-
curred within the area. He consistently and accurately report-
ed the changing situation to the Battalion Command Bunker and
remained at the switchboard throughout the entire mortar attack.
The actions of Specialist Four Goski are in keeping with the
highest traditions of the military service and reflect great
credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
