4th Motorized Division
4th Infantry Division
1941 - 1945
SGT William J. Gervasio trained
with the 22nd Infantry Regiment in the United States and England,
landed on Utah Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and was wounded two
days later.
He returned to his unit on July 12, and was captured July 29, during the battles of the St-Lo breakout.
He survived over six months in
German Stalag prison camps, until liberated by the Russians
on January 31, 1945.
It took nearly three months
after being liberated for him to reach home,
undertaking a journey which would lead him and several of his
fellow prisoners
through Poland, Russia, Egypt, Italy and finally home to the
United States.
The following pages of photos of SGT Gervasio
were submitted by his son, John,
in loving memory of his father, a true hero of our country.
