This photo, like most of his taken in Europe, was sent home by Gene in letters to Jean.
Note the wartime mail censor has blocked out the shoulder sleeve insignia
of the 4th Infantry Division on Gene's upper left coat sleeve.

Soldier on right is unidentifed but is from Medical Detachment 22nd Infantry
and is believed to be Jimmy. He is also seen in several of Gene's photos from
Fort Benning and the Louisiana Maneuvers.

Letter written by Gene to his future wife Jean and dated June 6, 1944
Note Gene's return address gives his rank as Corporal (Technician 5th Class)
As a member of the Medical Detachment Headquarters Gene did not land on D-Day
but joined the Regiment in Normandy several days to a week later.

 

 

Letter written by Gene to his future wife Jean postmarked July 20, 1944.
Note Gene's return address gives his rank as Sergeant (Technician 4th Class)
so sometime between the previous letter of June 6 and this letter of July 20 Gene
received his promotion to Technician 4th Class.
