Florida upon which Gene wrote to his future wife Jean. Note Gene had added his return address of the
22nd Infantry Medical Detachment.

 

 


Poem included by Gene in letter he wrote of October 19, 1943. The poem has an unknown author
and reflects the attitude of the soldiers being deployed to Camp Gordon Johnston at Carrabelle, Florida
for amphibious training.

published at Camp Gordon Johnston, Florida October 23, 1943


 

 


On the above page in the lower left hand corner is a notice about the death of Staff Sergeant
Albert D. Marsh from Company C 22nd Infantry. Marsh died in a swimming accident on October 15, 1943.

 

 


 

 


 

 

Part of a letter Gene wrote dated November 1, 1943 describing his participation in
training exercises (problems) at Camp Gordon Johnston. The middle passage reads:

"They've taken me out on one
problem already, and they are preparing
to take me out on another.
Dog island is about 12 miles
out on the water. We are going to
attack it tomorrow."

Note postmark with AMPHIBIOUS TRAINING CENTER of Camp Gordon Johnston, Florida.
Gene's rank at that time of Technician 5th Class was equal in pay grade and responsibility
with the rank of Corporal and he indicated that Corporal rank in his return address.

In the letter Gene writes that he will be on a training exercise on Thanksgiving Day of 1943.

he and the 22nd Infantry carried out while at Camp Gordon Johnston.

 

 

Change of address card sent by Gene dated November 26, 1943 informing his girl Jean
that he had moved from Camp Gordon Johnston to Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
Note that by this time Gene had been promoted to Technician 5th Class (T/5).

At the above date Gene was actually at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey making preparations to depart overseas.
Fourteen days after he wrote the above letter Gene would sail with the Regiment on the
Capetown Castle bound for England.
