FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - A memorial dedicated to the 22nd
Infantry Regiment was unveiled at the Memorial Walk of Honor
on Fort Benning on Tuesday.
The monument is in memory of the 2,954 (sic) soldiers killed in
the line of duty between the War of 1812 and today in that unit.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel and current Congressman Steve Russell,
of Oklahoma, commanded the 22nd Infantry task force
responsible for the capture of Saddam Hussein. He was
instrumental in getting the memorial established.
The monument will be the only national memorial for the 22nd
Infantry Regiment Society.
"It's very important that we have a place to reflect for
those of us that knew the names on the memorial and for the
families
and descendants to come and reflect on their loved one,"
Russell said.
Russell said he wanted a traditional memorial. The 22nd Infantry
Regiment memorial includes, on the last 100 yards ramp
inside the museum, a restored Bradley. The fighter vehicle was
used by Congressman Russell's unit during combat in Iraq.
The Bradley was hit by an IED, killing two soldiers and leaving
many more injured.
Remarks at the ceremony were followed by a procession to the
Memorial Walk of Honor, where the monument bearing the names
of the near 3,000 22nd infantrymen who died was unveiled. Also
included in the memorial is a bronze statue,
showing the strength of the soldiers.
