The following are handwritten
copies of letters sent to Elmore Nelson
by his former comrades of Company H.
The above letter was written by Charles E. Rankin.
Rankin enlisted in the
22nd Infantry in 1897 and served alongside Elmore Nelson in
Company H
in Cuba and the Philippines. He was discharged in 1900 as an
Artificer.
In the letter Rankin gives the names and addresses of several other comrades from Company H 22nd Infantry:
William J. Carey
Carey served in Company
H 22nd Infantry from 1891 to 1895 and then again from 1897 to
1899.
He served alongside Elmore Nelson in Company H in Cuba and the
Philippines.
Otto Salzmann
Salzmann served in the
8th Cavalry from 1893 to 1896. He then served in Company H 22nd
Infantry from
1896 to 1900 and alongside Elmore Nelson in Company H in Cuba and
the Philippines. Salzmann went on
to serve in the 5th Field Artillery from 1900 to 1903.
Michael L. Donohoe
Donohoe served in
Company H 22nd Infantry from 1897 to 1900 and alongside Elmore
Nelson in Company H
in Cuba and the Philippines. Donohoe was wounded in Cuba at the
Battle of El Caney.
Charles H. Cranford
Cranford enlisted in
Company H 22nd Infantry in October 1898 and served alongside
Elmore Nelson in the
Philippines. He later transferred to the 13th Field Artillery and
was discharged in 1901.
Ernest D. Pancost
Pancost served in the
5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in Florida in 1898. He enlisted in
Company H 22nd Infantry
in January 1899 and served alongside Elmore Nelson in the
Philippines. He was discharged in 1900.
Joseph E. Lauscher
Lauscher enlisted in
Company H 22nd Infantry in November 1898 and served alongside
Elmore Nelson in Company H
in the Philippines. He was discharged in 1901.

The above letter was written by Otto Salzmann.
Salzmann was born in Brandenburg,
Germany. He served for ten years in the United States Army
during three enlistments, one in the Cavalry, one in the Infantry
and one in the Artillery.
He served alosngside Elmore Nelson in Cuba and the Philippines.
In the letter Salzmann mentions another comrade of his and Elmore Nelson, Christ F. Seib.
Seib was born in Darmstadt, Germany. He
enlisted in Company H 22nd Infantry in October 1898
and served alongside Elmore Nelson in the Philippines. According
to Salzmann Seib had been the
Company clerk for Company H. Seib was transferred to the 13th
Field Artillery for a short time
before returning to the 22nd Infantry where he rose to the rank
of Battalion Sergeant Major.
His career is difficult to trace after 1907 when he was
discharged from what may have been
his final enlistment in the 22nd Infantry. He was found to have
served in the 21st Infantry
at least from the years 1911 -1914 where he rose from the rank of
Battalion Sergeant Major
to Regimental Command Sergeant.

The above letter was written by Sanford Baker who served in Company H 22nd Infantry from 1897-1900.
Baker served alongside
Elmore Nelson in Company H in Cuba and the Philippines
and was discharged with the rank of Corporal at Cabiao on the
Island of Luzon
on August 10, 1900.
