Bob Babcock writes:
"As 1-22 Infantry was
brought to an over-strength of new Soldiers to train and
retain at Fort Lewis, WA in January 1966,
Bill Saling was assigned to the very important support platoon
leader job. Working across all four companies in the battalion,
Bill provided the support when and where it was needed, both in
training and once they arrived in Vietnam. Again working across
the battalion, the last half of Bills Vietnam tour was as
Battalion S-1 (personnel officer). Few officers in the battalion
were as
well-known and respected as was Bill Saling. He lived our motto
Deeds not Words. This Regular, by God is
sorely missed."
Bill was buried on 2 October 2023 in the Georgia National
Cemetery in Canton, GA.
