Party time on the beach
at Tuy Hoa, around March 1971

that sign says "Off Limit", but to anyone with a CIB
it actually reads "Welcome All Infantrymen"
Lizards at Tuy Hoa
A small Mexican guy attached to mortars taught us how to catch
the lizards.
(Ed., these lizards
lived in the sandy areas at Tuy Hoa.
On a sunny day they would pop up from their holes and run all
over the place.)
Me - looking a little rough after an all-nighter on mortars at LZ Action

Firing our mortars at LZ Action
Our mortar rounds
exploding during a firepower demonstration
for some Army brass. The Dusters showed off also. LZ Action.
Sign on right below the flag is for A Battery 1/92 Artillery.
Looking down on LZ
Action from a hill. Our mortars & men were convoyed
by tracked vehicles to the top of this hill for covering fire in
the valleys beyond.
The tanks and artillery couldn't reach the areas beyond this
hill.
The tank trajectory was too low. Their rounds just barely cleared
when shooting over us.
We had to get below ground in case they hit a tree etc.
I think this was one of the last field missions I was on.
This is one of our reconnaissance patrols from this hill top firing position.
The guys were trying to
get out of the sun.
We weren't supposed to make any dug in improvements here.
The mortar position was supposed to be temporary.
