Michael Belis Company C 1/22 Infantry 1970-1971

Tuy Hoa, 1971

"Sidewinders" - Sign outside 3rd Platoon barracks, Co C, 1/22 Inf.

Tuy Hoa had been built as a "model" Air Force Base for a wing of F-100 fighter bombers in 1967.
When we became permanently based out of Tuy Hoa we took over quarters previously occupied by Air Force personnel.
Well constructed barracks, concrete sidewalks, running water in the latrines. Really luxurious living for infantry in VN.

1/22 Infantry came under operational command of 1st Field Force (IFFV)
in late 1970. Both of the above subdued shoulder sleeve insignia for 1st Field Force
were issued to me from our Company's supply room. On left, rare style cut edge embroidered on twill
with black bar in upper right of shield, in the center, merrowed edge fully embroidered.
On right, full color version for wear on dress uniforms is one I bought after coming home.

Jungle fatigue shirt I wore at Tuy Hoa. You can just barely see my CIB,
hidden by the collar, above the US ARMY tape on the left breast. Note the embroidered on twill
1st Field Force shoulder patch on the left shoulder is a different style than in the photo above this one.
Once we were with 1st Field Force we moved our 4th Infantry Division patch to our
right shoulder, to indicate prior combat service with that unit. On the left shoulder can be seen
the imprint of where the 4th Division patch used to be.

This shirt is now on permanent display at the US Army museum at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
