Michael Belis Company C 1/22 Infantry 1970-1971
Phu Hiep
Company C of 1st Battalion was
stationed at Phu Hiep, about 6 miles south of Tuy Hoa,
in late 1970. I think we only stayed at Phu Hiep for about 2 or 3
weeks. It was a US Army Airfield
at which was stationed an Aviation Company of Grumman Mohawk
reconnaissance aircraft.
As I recall we manned the guard
towers and bunkers on the north half of the base,
while a unit from the 173rd Airborne manned the positions on the
south side of the base.
A dirt road ran right through
the base, west to east, on which every morning and evening
the people from the local villages would walk on to get to and
from their fishing boats at the ocean.
The area we occupied at
Phu Hiep was pretty run down.
Thank God we didn't stay there long.
