3rd Platoon Leader Nov 1965 - Dec 1966

Bravo Company 1/22 Infantry 4th Infantry Division
August 10, 1966
3rd Platoon, B 1/22 had first patrol mission to the east of the newly established 4th Infantry Division base camp.
After the uneventful patrol, PSG Frank Roath poses with our newly assigned Vietnamese interpreter, SGT Quann.
One of the many daily
patrols run by 3rd Platoon, B 1/22 in September 1966,
while securing the rice harvest along Highway 1, south of Tuy
Hoa.
Bomb scar on side of
mountain is where the air attack went in to support 1/22 in
engagement with the enemy.
It was during this engagement that PFC Albert Collins, C 1/22,
was killed on Sept 3, 1966.
PFC Collins was the first KIA of the 22nd Infantry and 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam.
September 1966, SSG Jim
Benge and his squad, 3rd Platoon B 1/22 cross a river
while patrolling south of Tuy Hoa, along Highway 1.
Bunched up on patrol,
south of Tuy Hoa, September 1966.
Fortunately, we didn't get punished for this obvious tactical
mistake made by 3rd Platoon, B 1/22.
By comparison to the previous pic, this patrol by 3rd Platoon south of Tuy Hoa in Sept 1966 was done textbook perfect.
Note machine gun in foreground protecting the well disbursed troops as they work up the hillside trail.
October 1966
3rd Platoon B 1/22 crosses a rice paddy while working along Highway 19, east of Pleiku.
SP4 Stan Cameron, RTO is in the foreground.
Late October 1966
SP4 Jackson, 3rd Platoon
medic, and SSG Baez, squad leader,
assist a Montagnard in need of medical attention on his leg,
while on a sweep of Montagnard villages along Highway 19 east of
Pleiku.
This was taken in
October 1966 during one of our sweeps through Montagnard villages
along Hwy 19,
east of Pleiku, up toward the Mang Yang Pass.
This is one of my
favorite pictures. Assuming that boy was about 10 years old then,
he would be about 46 now,
if he made it through the war and the terrible treatment the NVA
have given to the Montagnards since we left Vietnam. Picture was
taken in October 1966. Have always wondered what happened to him.
Scout dogs and their handlers were great assets to our Company -- this is the first dog we worked with, in late October 1966 while patrolling around Highway 19 east of Pleiku.
November 1, 1966 - after
an all night convoy ride to help a beseiged Special Forces camp
at Plei Me,
PSG Charlie Reynolds of B 1/22 makes dresses out of sand bags for
Montagnard kids.
Fortunately the expected NVA attack did not happen. PSG Frank
Roath is squatting in left rear.
