Paul Wilfred Varin was born in Montreal, Canada on April 20, 1925.
He resided in Winooski,
Chittenden County, Vermont prior to the war and worked for the
American Woolen Company in Winooski.
He was drafted into the Army on September 22, 1943 and is recorded as beginning active duty on October 14, 1943.
His religion was listed as Catholic.
While a Private in Company A,
7th Battalion, 2nd Regiment at the Infantry Replacement Training
Center
at Fort McClellan, Alabama he filed a petition for U.S.
citizenship. His request was granted, and on
January 29, 1944 Paul W. Varin became a naturalized American
citizen.
He was assigned to Company D as
a Private from the 4th Infantry Division replacement pool
on June 17, 1944.
He was promoted to Private First Class on July 13, 1944.
Private First Class Varin was
killed in action in Germany on September 16, 1944, near the town
of Sellerich.
during the 22nd Infantry's first penetration into Germany.
He was awarded the Oak Leaf
Cluster to the Bronze Star Medal in 4th Division
General Orders # 91 dated 21 December 1944.

Paul W. Varin was buried in the
temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Foy Cemetery, Bastogne, Belgium and some time later his remains
were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in Vermont.
