Virgil Vanover was born in Knott County, Kentucky on August 12, 1919.
Prior to entering military
service he was employed by the Wisconsin Coal Company
in Knott County, Kentucky.
He was drafted into the Army on
May 6, 1943.
His home of residence was listed as Amburgey, Knott County,
Kentucky and
his civilian occupation was listed as mining machine operators
and miners. He
had completed grammar school and was single with no dependents.
His religion was listed as Protestant.
He was assigned to Headquarters
Company as a Private First Class from the 4th Infantry Division
replacement pool
on July 1, 1944.
Private First Class Vanover was
killed in action in Germany during the Battle of the Hürtgen
Forest
on November 26, 1944.
Virgil Vanover was buried in the
temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Henri-Chapelle Cemetery, Eupen, Belgium and some time later
his remains were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in Kentucky.
