Lewis H. Vanatta was born in Phillipsburg, New Jersey in 1882.

He enlisted for a period of 3 years as a Private in Company D of the 22nd Infantry on February 8, 1902
at Easton, Pennsylvania. His enlistment record indicated that he stood 5 feet 4 inches tall, had light brown hair,
brown eyes and a ruddy complexion. His previous occupation was listed as Painter.

Private Lewis H. Vanatta died of pneumonia at Fort Reno, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) on July 3, 1903.
