Private Smith died of endarteritis of the cerebral vessels on March 14, 1896 at Fort Yates, North Dakota.
William Smith was originally
buried in the Post Cemetery at Fort Yates, North Dakota.
His remains were re-interred in the National Cemetery at Keokuk, Iowa on November 14, 1908.
