William Smith

William Smith was born in New York City, New York in 1861.

He enlisted as a Private in Company A of the 22nd Infantry for a period of 3 years on October 26, 1894 at New York City,
New York. His enlistment record indicated that he stood 5 feet 7 ¾ inches tall, had brown hair, light blue eyes and a ruddy
complexion. His previous occupation was listed as Soldier.

Smith was asigned to Company A at Fort Keogh, Montana on November 14, 1894. He had served two previous
enlistments in the Army being discharged from Company A of the 14th Infantry on October 9, 1894.

 

Private Smith died of endarteritis of the cerebral vessels on March 14, 1896 at Fort Yates, North Dakota.

 

William Smith was originally buried in the Post Cemetery at Fort Yates, North Dakota.
His remains were re-interred in the National Cemetery at Keokuk, Iowa on November 14, 1908.
