John Wesley Smith was born in Bear Lake, Manistee County, Michigan on December 3, 1919.

He was drafted into the Army on November 25, 1942 at Kellogg Field, Kalamazoo, Michigan. His home of residence
was listed as Bear Lake, Manistee County, Michigan and his civilian occupation was listed as farm hands, general farms.
He had completed grammar school and was married.
His religion was listed as Protestant.

He was assigned to Company C as a Private First Class from the 4th Infantry Division replacement pool
on July 17, 1944.

Private First Class Smith was killed in action in Germany during the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest
on November 27, 1944.

 

 

 

John W. Smith was originally buried in the temporary cemetery at Henri-Chapelle
in Block CC Row 8 Grave 148, and was moved to the permanent cemetery at Henri-Chapelle,
in the 1947-1949 time frame, when the temporary cemeteries were shut down.
