Joseph Marion Smierciak was born in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania on October 24, 1918.
Prior to entering military
service he was employed by Hunkin Conkey Construction Company
in Whitney Point, New York.
He was drafted into the Army on
April 30, 1942 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His home of residence
was listed as Mt. Pleasant,
Pennsylvania and his civilian occupation was listed as
Semiskilled Miners, And Mining-machine Operators.
He had completed grammar school and was single with no
dependents. His religion was listed as Catholic.
He was awarded the Good Conduct
Medal in Headquarters 22nd Infantry Motorized General Orders No.
5,
dated June 8, 1943 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
He was promoted to Corporal on August 1, 1944.
He was reduced to the rank of Private on August 14, 1944.
Private Smierciak was killed in action in Germany on September 16, 1944, near the town of Sellerich.

Joseph M. Smierciak was buried
in the temporary U.S. Military cemetery at Fosse, Belgium
in Block G Row 7 Grave 124 and his remains were later transferred
to the cemetery at Henri-Chapelle,
in the 1947-1949 time frame, when the temporary cemeteries were
shut down.
