James Joseph Shields was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 8, 1910.
Prior to entering military
service he was employed by the American Can Warehouse
in Brooklyn, New York.
He was drafted into the Army on
March 5, 1942 at Camp Upton, Yaphank, New York. His home of
residence
was listed as Brooklyn, Kings County, New York and his civilian
occupation was listed as Checkers.
He had completed one year of High School and was single with no
dependents.
His religion was listed as Catholic.
Private Shields died on July 12, 1944 of wounds received in action in Normandy, France.

James J. Shields was buried in
the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery
Sainte Mere-Eglise #2 at Carentan, France and his remains were
returned
to the United States where he was interred in New York on July 9,
1948.
