James Raymond Schmidt was born in Millvale, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania on March 26, 1923.

Prior to entering military service he was employed at the H. J. Heinz Company
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He was drafted into the Army at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 4, 1943.
His home of residence was listed as Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
and his civilian occupation was listed as packing, filling, labeling, marking,
bottling and related occupations. He had completed four years of High
School and was single with dependents. His religion was listed as Protestant.

Private First Class Schmidt was listed as Missing In Action in France during the attack on Cherbourg,
along the Ste. Pierre Eglise-Cherbourg road on June 25, 1944.

(Note: James R. Schmidt was listed in the Morning Reports for Company C as Missing In Action on June 25.
The newspaper account below and his grave marker give his date of death as June 27. Confirmation of that
June 27 date could not be found. Thus, the date of June 25 is assumed to be the actual date of his death.)

 

James R. Schmidt was buried in the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Sainte Mere-Eglise #2 at Carentan, France and some time later
his remains were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in Pennsylvania on July 8, 1948.
