Richard Walter Pierce was born in Richmond, Washington County, Rhode Island on September 25, 1915.
Prior to entering military
service he was employed by the Onelyville Ice Company
in Onelyville, Rhode Island.
He was drafted into the Army on
June 17, 1942 at Providence, Rhode Island. His home of residence
was listed
as Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island and his civilian occupation
was listed as Semiskilled Occupations In
Manufacture Of Fabricated Plastic Products. He had completed one
year of High School and was single
with no dependents. His religion was listed as Protestant.
He was awarded the Good Conduct
Medal as a Private in Company C,
in Headquarters 22nd Infantry General Orders No. 14 dated
December 31, 1943
at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
He was promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant on July 15, 1944.
He was wounded in action on July 30, 1944 and returned to duty on October 1, 1944.
He was wounded in action again, on November 27, 1944 and returned to duty on February 16, 1945.
Staff Sergeant Pierce was
wounded in action for a third time, in Germany on March 4, 1945,
in the vicinity of Hillesheim. He died of those wounds on March
15, 1945.

He was also awarded the Belgian Fourragere
Richard W. Pierce was buried in
the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Hamm Cemetery, Hamm, Luxembourg and some time later
his remains were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in New York on July 27, 1949.
