George Joe Mildenstein was born in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on August 27, 1922.

His home of residence was listed as Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
His religion was listed as Catholic.

Prior to entering military service he was employed by Midwest Consolidating And Distributing
in Chicago, Illinois.

His Army serial number indicates he was drafted into the Army.

He was assigned to Company B 22nd Infantry from the 4th Infantry Division replacement pool on
July 13, 1944.

He was wounded in action on August 1, 1944. He returned to duty on November 12, 1944,
and was transferred on that date with four other soldiers to Company A.

Private Mildenstein died of wounds received in action in Germany, on December 3, 1944, the last day of the 22nd Infantry's
participation in the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest, just as the Regiment was being relieved.

 

The entry for George J. Mildenstein in the casualty lists of the 22nd Infantry for the month of December 1944.
Note that he was initially listed as Seriously Wounded in Action (SWA). His status was later changed to Died Of Wounds.

George J. Mildenstein was originally buried in the temporary cemetery at Henri-Chapelle
in Block KK Row 6 Grave 101, and was moved to the permanent cemetery at Henri-Chapelle,
in the 1947-1949 time frame, when the temporary cemeteries were shut down.
