Eugene Michael McCrystal was born in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois on May 9, 1918.

Prior to entering military service he was employed by Dryden Rubber Company
in Chicago, Illinois.

He was drafted into the Army on November 21, 1941 at Chicago, Illinois. His home of residence was listed as Chicago,
Cook County, Illinois and his civilian occupation was listed as Semiskilled linemen and servicemen,
telegraph, telephone, and power. He had completed three years of High School and was single with
no dependents.

He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal in Headquarters 22nd Infantry Motorized General Orders No. 5,
dated June 8, 1943 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

Technician Fifth Class McCrystal was killed in action in France, during the attack toward the Quineville Ridge,
on June 12, 1944.

 

 

Eugene M. McCrystal was buried in the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Sainte Mere-Eglise #1 at Carentan, France and some time later
his remains were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in Illinois in 1948.

 

 

The following abstract from the Chicago Tribune of October 10, 1948 announced the return of
Eugene McCrystal's remains to the United States for interrment:

T/5 Michael Eugene McCrystal, 22nd Inf. 4th Div., killed in action 6/12/1944, in Normandy,
son of the late James P. and Mary Hayes McCrystal, brother of James P. Jr., Margaret Weatherford,
Geraldine McGann, Charles, Imogene, Mary Jane, Fransella, Harmon and Donald McCrystal.
Funeral service Sat., 9 a.m., from funeral home, Austin and Lake st., to St. Lucy's church.
Interment Dixon, Ill. Military honors A.L. post 52.
