John Martin

Company D 22nd Infantry

DOD 06/28/1867

In some accounts this Soldier's name is listed as John T. Martin. In the Returns of the
22nd Infantry and on his enlistment record his name is listed as John Martin.

John Martin was born in New York, New York in 1847.

He enlisted as a Private for a period of 3 years in Company D 13th Infantry on August 23, 1865
at Springfield, Illinois. His enlistment record indicated that he stood 5 feet 5 inches tall, had dark
hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. His previous occupation was listed as Farmer.

In September 1866 Company D 13th Infantry was re-designated as Company D 22nd Infantry
and thus Private John Martin became a member of the 22nd Infantry.

Private John Martin died on June 28, 1867 near Fort Dakota, Dakota Territory.

The explanation of his death in the Returns of the 22nd Infantry for the month of June 1867
had the entry "Drowned while enroute to Sioux City, Iowa."

Burial:
Mount Pleasant Cemetery
Sioux Falls
Minnehaha County

The name of Private John T. Martin is inscribed as being one of
the 22nd Infantry soldiers who died while stationed at
Fort Dakota.

The marker confirms that Private Martin drowned on June 28, 1867.

Regrettably the 1st Battalion website could not find a photo of side
two of this marker and does not know what information is presented
on side two.

The reference to "Pvt. Fred W. Pues" being the first soldier from
the 22nd Infantry to die at Fort Dakota appears to be in error.

Private Frederick W. Pues is noted in the Returns of the
13th Infantry for the month of August 1866
as having Died of Disease as a member of
Company D 13th Infantry. The enlistment record
for Frederick W. Pues indicates that he served
in both the 13th Infantry and 22nd Infantry,
however that also appears to be in error.

The 2nd Battalion of the 13th Infantry was not re-designated
as the 22nd Infantry until September 1866,
one month after Pues died.
