John Henry Mahoney Jr. was born on June 3, 1913, in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts,
the son of John H. Mahoney and Margaret (Mullen) Mahoney.

He enlisted in Company B 181st Infantry Massachusetts National Guard in 1935.

Prior to entering Federal military service he was employed by the Bailey Rd. Lumber Company
in Worcester, Massachusetts.

His National Guard unit was Federalized on January 16, 1941.

He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in early 1944 and deployed overseas in
March 1944.

His religion was listed as Catholic.

He was assigned to Company E 22nd Infantry in England on April 19, 1944.

On June 14, 1944, he was lightly injured in action in Normandy, and sent to
a medical facility. The date of his return to the 22nd Infantry could not be found.

He was assigned to Company C on January 1, 1945.

He was lightly wounded in action in Germany on February 8, 1945.

He was assigned to Company A as a First Lieutenant on March 18, 1945.

First Lieutenant John H. Mahoney was killed in action in Germany, near Bad Mergentheim, on April 2, 1945.

John H. Mahoney was awarded a Posthumous Bronze Star Medal
for heroic achievement near Quineville, France on June 10, 1944 in .
General Orders #10 Headquarters 4th Infantry Division dated January 26, 1946.

He was also authorized the Belgian Fourragere

 

 

 

John H. Mahoney was buried in the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Saint Avold Cemetery, Metz, France and some time later
his remains were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in Saint John's Cemetery, Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts
on January 27, 1949.
