Samuel John Leyman was born in Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania on June 25, 1918.
Prior to entering military service he was employed at Buddy's Submarines (sandwich shop) in Camden, New Jersey.
He was drafted into the Army on
May 20, 1944 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. His home of residence was
listed as
Camden County, New Jersey and his civilian occupation was listed
a Kitchen Workers In Hotels,
Restaurants, Railroads, Steamships, Etc. He had completed grammar
school and was married.
His religion was listed as Catholic.
In June 1944 Leyman was hospitalized for a short time due to heat exhaustion and soon returned to duty.
Private Leyman was killed in
action in Germany on December 3, 1944, on the last day of the
participation by the 22nd Infantry in the Battle of the Hürtgen
Forest.
He was originally buried in the
Henri-Chapelle temporary cemetery in Block PP Row 5 Grave 93,
and was moved to the permanent Henri-Chapelle cemetery in the
1947-1949 time frame,
when the temporary cemeteries were shut down.
