Charles Theodore Jones was born in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland on November 10, 1913.
(His draft registration card of 1940 gave his birth year as 1912.)

He was drafted into the Army on June 4, 1941 at Baltimore, Maryland. His home of residence was listed as
Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland, and his civilian occupation was listed as Semiskilled Occupations
In Manufacture Of Miscellaneous Finished Lumber Products. He had completed grammar school
and was single with no dependents. His religion was listed as Protestant.

The date of his assignment to the 22nd Infantry is unknown but he was with the Regiment
at least by December 1942 as his name is listed in a Company roster on a menu for the
Christmas Dinner of Company A 22nd Infantry at Camp Gordon, Georgia in December 1942. *

He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal as a Private First Class in Headquarters 22nd Infantry
General Orders No. 5 dated June 8, 1943 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal, apparently (by the article below)
for his actions the day after the D-Day landing, when 1st Battalion
attacked the German coastal battery at Crisbecq.

Private First Class Jones was killed in action in Germany, on February 10, 1945,
during the battle for the city of Prüm.

He was also awarded the Belgian Fourragere

 

 

Charles T. Jones was buried in the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Foy Cemetery, Bastogne, Belgium and some time later his remains
were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in Maryland.
