William Joseph Hilliker was born in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut on October 31, 1919.
Prior to entering military
service he was employed by the Hartfor rayon Corporation
in Hartford, Connecticut.
He was drafted into the Army on
February 20, 1942, at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
He listed his home of residence as Middlesex County, Connecticut,
and his civilian occupation as
semiskilled mechanic and repairman. He had completed two years of
High School and was single
with no dependents. His religion was listed as Protestant.
He was assigned to Company A from the 92nd Replacement Battalion on November 18, 1944.
Private First Class Hilliker was
killed in action in Germany, on the last day of the 22nd
Infantry's participation
in the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest, December 3, 1944, just as
the Regiment was being relieved.
He was initially listed as Missing In Action and later his status was changed to Killed In Action.
William J. Hilliker was
originally buried in the temporary cemetery at Henri-Chapelle
in Block JJ Row 3 Grave 48, and was moved to the permanent
cemetery at Henri-Chapelle,
in the 1947-1949 time frame, when the temporary cemeteries were
shut down.
