John Hartung Jr. was born in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on November 21, 1921.

He listed his home of residence as Cook County, Illinois.
His religion was listed as Protestant.

His Army serial number indicates he was drafted into the Army.

He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal as a Private First Class in Company B,
in Headquarters 22nd Infantry General Orders No. 14 dated December 31, 1943
at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

He was promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant in Company B on November 29, 1944.

Staff Sergeant Hartung was killed in action in Germany, on December 3, 1944, the last day of the
22nd Infantry's particpation in the Battle of the Hürtgern Forest, just as the Regiment was being relieved.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal in Headquarters 4th Infantry Division General Order # 87
dated 27 November 1944.

 

 

 

John Hartung Jr. was buried in the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Henri-Chapelle Cemetery, Eupen, Belgium and some time later
his remains were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in Illinois in 1947.
