John Hartung Jr. was born in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on November 21, 1921.

Staff Sergeant Hartung was
killed in action in Germany, on December 3, 1944, the last day of
the
22nd Infantry's particpation in the Battle of the Hürtgern
Forest, just as the Regiment was being relieved.
He was awarded the Bronze Star
Medal in Headquarters 4th Infantry Division General Order # 87
dated 27 November 1944.
John Hartung Jr. was buried in
the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Henri-Chapelle Cemetery, Eupen, Belgium and some time later
his remains were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in Illinois in 1947.
