William Eugene Edmonds was born
in Kentucky on November 13, 1921.
When he registererd for the draft in August 1940 he gave his
place of birth as "Shamrock", Kentucky.
He enlisted in the Regular Army
on September 26, 1940 at East St Louis, Illinois. His home of
residence was listed
as Perry County, Illinois and his civilian occupation was listed
as Unskilled Sawmill Occupations.
He had completed grammar school and was single with no
dependents.
The date of his assignment to
the 22nd Infantry is unknown but he was serving as a
Private with Company B 22nd Infantry at least by October 1941 as
he is in a Company
photo taken at Fort Benning, Georgia during that time frame.

He was promoted to Sergeant in
Headquarters 22nd Infantry Motorized Special Orders Number 85
date April 10, 1942. *
He was awarded the Good Conduct
Medal in Headquarters 22nd Infantry Motorized General Orders No.
5,
dated June 8, 1943 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
He was wounded in action on June 20, 1944.
He was reduced to the rank of Private on August 25, 1944.
He was promoted to Private First Class on October 3, 1944.
He was a non-battle casualty in
Belgium on October 9, 1944 and returned to duty
on October 15, 1944.
Private First Class Edmonds was
killed in action in Germany during the Battle of the Hürtgen
Forest
on November 27, 1944.
