John Darragh Donaway was born in New York City on December 24, 1910.

He served in Company F 102nd Engineers of the New York National Guard from
December 1, 1931 through November 4, 1935.

When he registered for the draft in 1940 he gave his address as the Federal Correctional Institute
in Englewood, Colorado, and that he was employed by the Department of Justice Bureau of Prisons.

John D. Donaway was drafted into the Army on April 21, 1944 at Fort Thomas, Newport, Kentucky.
His home of residence was listed as Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio and his civilian occupation was
listed as Policemen And Detectives, Public Service. He had completed grammar school and
was married. His religion was listed as Protestant.

He was assigned to Company C from the 92nd Replacement Battalion on November 26, 1944.

Private Donaway was killed in action in Germany during the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest
on December 2, 1944.

John D. Donaway was originally buried in the temporary cemetery at Henri-Chapelle
in Block JJ Row 10 Grave 187, and was moved to the permanent cemetery at Henri-Chapelle,
in the 1947-1949 time frame, when the temporary cemeteries were shut down.
