Joseph John Czempkawski was born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania on April 23, 1925.
Prior to entering military service he was employed by the National Publishing Company in Philadelphia.
He was drafted into the Army on
September 3, 1943 at Camden, New Jersey.
His home of residence was listed as Camden, New Jersey and his
civilian
occupation was listed as Semiskilled occupations in fabrication
of metal products.
He had completed four years of High School and was single with
dependents.
His religion was listed as Catholic.
Czempkawski was assigned as a
Private to Company B 22nd Infantry on June 17, 1944.
He was one of 25 enlisted men assigned to the Company from the
4th Infantry Division replacement pool on that date.
He was promoted to Private First Class on September 8, 1944.
He was wounded in action on September 16, 1944 and returned to duty on November 23, 1944.
He was promoted from Private First Class to Staff Sergeant On November 29, 1944.
Staff Sergeant Czempkawski died
of wounds received in action in Germany
during the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest on December 3, 1944.
Joseph J. Czempkawski was buried
in the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Henri-Chapelle Cemetery, Eupen, Belgium and some time later
his remains were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in New Jersey.
