William Estcourt Bruce

William E. Bruce was born in Pennsylvania in 1863. He was appointed from Ohio
to the US Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1883, at the age of 19 years and 8 months.
He graduated from the Academy number 41 out of a class of 64 on June 12, 1887. His best subjects were
Spanish and French, and his worst subjects were Law and Mathematics. He was a Lieutenant in Company C
of the Battalion Organization of Cadets.

Upon graduation he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 22nd Infantry. He served on frontier duty
with Company A of the 22nd Infantry at Fort Lewis, Colorado, Fort Keogh, Montana, and Camp Merritt
at the Indian Agency at Lame Deer, Montana.

Attesting to the hardships of duty on the frontier, 2nd Lieutenant William E. Bruce died of typhoid fever
at Fort Keogh, Montana, on February 27, 1892.

 

Second Lieutenant Willliam E. Bruce was decorated with the Indian Wars Campaign Medal

 

 

The following contains Special Orders of the 22nd Infantry, No 16, February 28, 1892,
announcing the death of 2nd Lieutenant William E. Bruce. The orders were written by
1st Lieutenant Frank B. Jones, who was Adjutant of the 22nd Infantry Regiment from
January 16, 1892 to January 16, 1896.
