Louis Emilio Befano was born in Belleville, Essex County, New Jersey on January 7, 1921.
Prior to entering military
service he was employed by Western Electric
in Kearney, New Jersey.
He was drafted into the Army on
October 27, 1942 at Newark, New Jersey. His home of residence was
listed
as East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey and his civilian
occupation was listed
as Semiskilled occupations in manufacture of electrical machinery
and accessories.
He had completed four years of High School and was single with
dependents.
His religion was listed as Catholic.
He was assigned to Company A as a Private from the 41st Replacement Battalion on September 27, 1944.
He was lightly wounded in action
on October 21, 1944 in an area around
Miescheid and Udenbreth, Germany, and returned to duty on
December 1, 1944.
Private First Class Befano was
killed in action in Germany during the Battle for Prüm
on February 10, 1945.
Louis E. Befano was buried in
the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Foy Cemetery, Bastogne, Belgium and some time later his remains
were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in New Jersey.
