John E. Bailey was born in Virginia on December 9, 1923.
(His enlistment record gives his birth year as 1910.)

He enlisted in the Regular Army on March 12, 1940.
(The application for his grave marker gives this date as March 8, 1940.)

At the time of his enlistment his home of residence was listed as Hawaii.
He had completed one year of High School. His religion was listed as Protestant.

Private Bailey was killed in action in Germany during the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest
on December 3, 1944.

John E. Bailey was buried in the temporary U.S. Military Cemetery,
Henri-Chapelle Cemetery, Eupen, Belgium and some time later
his remains were returned to the United States where he was
reinterred in Virginia.
