PFC Dean C. Wilson's decorations
PVT E-2 Dean Wilson
Dean Wilson and I were new guys
on June 24, 1969, when a patrol was being mustered to guard some
ammo
that had accidently fallen from a transport helicopter. Dean had
realized that I had just returned from a Green Eye
ambush,
and voluntarily agreed to go out on this mission in my stead. He
knew I was badly in need of some rest.
That was the kind of soldier Dean was, always putting others
welfare above his own.
Later that evening, we learned
that the munitions had exploded, killing five and wounding
several others.
Most of us understood that the enemy had booby-trapped it. We all
grieved for them when the services were held the next day
on the small fire-base we occupied.
I am proud to have served with Dean C. Wilson. I will always carry the weight of his loss. He was, and always will be my brother.
