Richard Roberts was killed in an explosion of a sling load of ammunition at grid reference ZA053938,
approximately 2 kilometers east/northeast of Polei Kleng airfield.

A 19 year old Pottsville Soldier was killed June 24 while on a mission to secure ammunition for his unit in Vietnam.

The serviceman PFC Richard Roberts, is a son of daniel C. and Joan Hauptly Roberts, 32 Nichols St. He had been
stationed in Vietnam since Dec 10, 1968, serving with Company B First Battalion 22nd Infantry 4th Infantry Division.

Roberts had been previously wounded in April.

The family was notified of PFC Roberts' death by Master Sergeant O'Guinn and Major Thomas Morgan
of the Army Advisory Unit, South Haven Monday evening.

The communication they received stated that Roberts was killed while securing ammunition which had been previously
dropped by resupply aircraft when the ammunition exploded.

PFC Roberts was a 1967 graduate of Posttsville Area H.S. and attended one year at Penn State Campus. He enlisted
June 28, 1968 and received basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. with advanced military training at Fort Gordon, Ga.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother Daniel C. Roberts Jr., a 1969 graduate of Pottsville Area H.S., his
paternal grandmother, Mrs. Amy Roberts, 349 Nichols St., and his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hauptly,
2205 W. market St., all of Pottsville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending arrival of the body in the United States.
Ruch Funeral Chapel has charge.
