William Murphy was injured when an M-79 grenade round detonated in the guard tower he was occupying
at the Tuy Hoa Air Base Complex at grid reference CQ218424. He was taken to the 8th Field Hospital
on the base, where he died of his wounds.

The 1st Battalion 22nd Infantry Historical Summary for the month of July 1971, dated 31 July 1971,
lists William Murphy's death in the following passage:

6. On 28 July 1971 one man from Company E was killed while on guard duty in
a tower on the Tuy Hoa bunkerline. An M-79 round exploded while the man was
handling it. (see Zappers News Vol 2, No. 1).
