SP4 Richard V. Ives was the first soldier of 1st Battalion 22nd Infantry to die in Vietnam.

He was also the first soldier of the 4th Infantry Division to die in Vietnam.

Richard Ives died when accidentally shot by another Soldier who was cleaning his pistol
after they had returned to their tent from perimeter guard duty. His death occurred at
grid reference AR796346, at Camp Enari, approximately 13 kilometers south of Pleiku City.
