For heroism in
connection with military operations against a hostile force:
Private First Class Fetherolf
distinguished himself on 16 February 1967, in the Republic of
Vietnam. On this date Private First Class
Fetherolf, a member of Company A, 1st Battalion 22d Infantry, 4th
Infantry Division, was serving as an
ammunition bearer with the point squad. When the squad was
suddenly subjected to brutal enemy fire,
Private First Class Fetherolf moved forward and established a
machine gun position. He brought deadly
effective fire on the enemy until the machine gun malfunctioned.
He worked feverishly to correct the trouble,
and then, firing from the hip, wiped out an enemy sniper
position. As he turned to advance on another
enemy position, he received a fatal wound. The actions of Private
First Class Fetherolf were in keeping
with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect
great credit upon himself, his unit and
the United States Army.
