1st Battalion 22nd Infantry
We Got Him -- The Hunt For Saddam Hussein
In
June 2003, two Iraqi businessmen approached an American outpost,
claiming to know
important information. What they revealed invigorated American
soldiers to pursue
one of the worlds most notorious dictators. Their journey
is a grand saga of human experience,
testing every element of character and fortitude in a six-month
manhunt that ended at a
hole on the bank of the Tigris River. This account exposes the
blow-by-blow plays of
the actual raids that netted Saddam, with never before revealed
information.
Written by LTC Steve Russell, Commander of 1-22 Infantry 2003-2005.

"We
Got Him!" - is the most well known quote from the war in
Iraq. No other event in Operation Iraqi Freedom
caught the attention of the world like the hunt for and capture
of Saddam Hussein.
"A moving, gripping account of one of the most remarkable achievements of soldiering in a generation." --- GEN (Ret) Tommy Franks
"An
extraordinary personal glimpse of the war, a monumental credit to
himself, his troops, and the United States of America."
--- The late Robin Moore, author of "The Green
Berets" and "The French Connection"
"Steve
delivers the most accurate account I have read to date of the...
capture of Saddam Hussein. The brave and heroic actions
of his Soldiers, along with the countless sacrifices and actions
by so many of them, have forever shaped the future of the world
in which we live." --- GEN Raymond T. Odierno,
Commander of 4ID (2002-2004)
Square in the middle of
the search, living in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit, was Lt. Col.
Steve Russell and his men
of 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division.
"We Got Him!" chronicles the day by day search and the
successes and dead ends as regular and special operations
Soldiers tore into Saddam's social networks that concealed
the whereabouts of Saddam. This is a must read for anyone wanting
to see the detailed story of this major event in world history.
Taken from his extensive journal notes, interviews with those who
were there, and painstaking research, Steve Russell
has preserved the story like only someone who lived the
experience can do. Their journey is a grand saga
of human experience, testing every element of character and
fortitude in a six-month manhunt that ended at a hole
on the bank of the Tigris River. This account exposes the
blow-by-blow plays of the actual raids that netted Saddam,
with never before revealed information, including 32 pages of
pictures, many never seen before.

The daily journals written by LTC Steve
Russell during his command of 1-22 IN in Iraq.
"We Got Him" draws extensively from these journals.
Steve Russell writes:
"The commanders wartime notebooks that I
kept during our service in Iraq in 2003-2004. These formed the
basis for much of the detail for the book
about the hunt & capture of Saddam. Combined with the combat
logs, reports and unit combat action reports, the amount of
material to form the accurate story
was immense. I am thankful we were able to preserve so much of
it."

Steve Russell while commanding 1-22 IN in Iraq.
Steve Russell writes:
"Inside my commanders notebooks that
formed the basis of much of the material for the book. At the
close of each day, when possible and no matter
how tired, I recorded notes of the days events, raids and combat
actions. I often included hand drawn sketches to jog the memory
as well.
The result is a detailed chronicle of our wartime service as it
happened."
