From CPT Ed Kennedy, CO of B/1-22
IN: While I dont have a great story like Bob clearing an LZ
to land the bird
(figuratively and literally) for Thanksgiving 1966, nor can my
story compare in my mind to a turkey sandwich in Hurtgen Forest
on Thanksgiving 1944, I can attest that the tradition is still
alive - that every fighting man and woman serving in Iraq with
4ID
had the option for a turkey dinner with all the trimmings in West
Rasheed in 2008
as well as Abu Gharab/Camp Liberty in
2006
and I can also attest to Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan in 2004
with the 25th ID.
This year the Soldiers of B/1-22 IN
enjoyed a meal prepared by the cooks of FOB Falcon DFAC. SG
Eric Cameron and I had a patrol
in the morning then headed back to pick up the birds in our
MRAPs. The patrol brought the Turkey feast out to the JSS
and we all ate till it hurt.
The Officers and NCOs in the company made sure to rotate the
Soldiers from the towers and in between patrols everyone got a
chance
to have some Turkey . In many ways it was business as usual
here in Iraq, and although there were moments when we all at some
point
reminisced or thought of our own special Family Thanksgiving
meals back home, the cooks here made the day a little more
special
with the great selection of food as we shared our Turkey Feast
with our deployed Bear Family.
