Soldiers continue mission to protect Iraq , bring stability
Story by Spc. Edgar Reyes
2nd BCT PAO, 4th Inf. Div.
July 8, 2006
FOB
KALSU, Iraq The ability to say mission
accomplished is perhaps the most rewarding thing a Soldier
can experience following a mission.
For the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade
Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division,
it represents the beginning of another quest to assist the Iraqi
Security Forces achieve self-sufficiency.
Initially
based out of Forward Operating Base Charlie, the squadron
conducted operations in the southern Babil province,
provided assistance to the Iraqi people in their endeavor to run
a legitimate provincial government, and trained the ISF to a
level
where it could plan and execute its own operations without
assistance from Multi-National Division Baghdad
Soldiers.
Our
main task there was to continue to assist the Iraqis in
developing their government and also train the ISF to provide
security for the area,
which we accomplished, said Maj. Scott Gerber, operations
officer, 1-10 Cav., 2nd BCT.
After
completing its mission in the south, 1-10 Cav. was tasked to move
the entire squadron north to FOB Falcon
as part of the plan to continue transferring battle space in
southern Iraq to the ISF units ready to tackle the
responsibility.
The entire transition went very smoothly, said
Gerber. It went by without any bumps or
hiccups.
The
relief in place/transfer of authority mission conducted with 1st
Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st BCT, 4th Inf. Div.,
was cleanly executed, said Gerber. The squadron moved four
troops in less than a month, which would not have been possible
without the assistance of junior enlisted Soldiers and support
from the 1-22 Inf. Regt. Moving all
the equipment and vehicles
could have been a difficult task for us, said Pfc. Stephon
Kowalski, cavalry scout, Troop C, 1-10 Cav,
but everyone chipped in and worked as a team so we were
able to complete the move in record time.
With
new missions come new challenges. The hardcore
insurgency at Charlie was almost nonexistent, said Gerber.
There was only a small dose of militia to worry
about. But here at Falcon, it is a different story.
The enemy is better organized and willing to take more risks than
what we have seen before.
Taking
advice from the previous unit, Soldiers from 1-10 Cav. rely
heavily on after-action reviews to spot vulnerabilities in their
strategies
and to adapt to enemy tactics, which in the long run will help
them overcome the terrorists.
Soldiers
from 1-10 Cav, although aware of the dangers present in their new
area of operations, said they look forward to the opportunity to
help not one,
but two regions of Iraq overcome terrorism. Our
mission is to set the conditions to transition battle space to
ISF and the Iraqi government,
said Gerber. Our goal is for them to control the
battle space before we go back to the States.

CAMP
TAJI, Iraq In a combined effort to rid the western Baghdad
area of terrorist activity and to make Iraq a safer place to
live,
3rd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division soldiers, along with
Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade
Combat Team,
4th Infantry Division, discovered three large caches of
weapons and roadside bomb-making materials over a one-week
period.
In
the first of three weapon seizures, Iraqi army soldiers from 3rd
Bde., 6th IA Div., discovered a sizeable weapons cache
just north of Baghdad International Airport in the Shohada region
June 30.
Following
a tip from an Iraqi citizen, the Iraqi unit responded to a report
of a roadside bomb planted near an elementary school.
When the soldiers arrived to investigate the report, they
discovered two 82mm mortar tubes, 19 82mm mortar rounds,
eight rocket-propelled grenade rounds, an RPG launcher, 31 60mm
mortar rounds, 91 mortar fuses, 48 fuses, two bullet-proof vests,
eight AK-47s, ten grenades, seven TNT sticks, 57 shotgun shells,
two Dragonov sniper rifles and more than 4,000 rounds of
small-arms ammunition.
In
the first week of July, Soldiers from 1st Bn., 22nd Inf. Regt.,
discovered two weapon caches in the Ibrahim Bin Ali Village area.
During the discoveries by two platoons in Company A, the
Soldiers discovered five RPG launchers, three RPG rounds, an RPG
site,
two land mines and a 76mm projectile in a bag.
Discovering these caches will definitely impair the
insurgents ability to attack Coalition Forces,
said Sgt. 1st Class Robert Adkinson, noncommissioned officer
in charge of battalion intelligence.
We have seen far too many innocent civilians getting
killed.
As
the Regulars of Task Force
1-22 resume combat operations in a new area of
operation, they have not skipped a beat,
said Staff Sgt. Andrew Atwater, plans and operations NCO, 1st
Bn., 22nd Inf. Regt. The task force continues to
support the Iraqi people
in their quest for a democratic way of life and enabling the
government to stand up for the people through combined
operations.
After each cache discovery, Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams were called in to destroy the munitions.

4th Infantry Soldier
renews wedding vows
By Emily Baker
Killeen Daily Herald July 20, 2006
When Staff Sgt. Paul Marler stepped off an
airplane that carried him from Kuwait to Dallas-Fort Worth
International Airport on Tuesday,
he was obviously stunned, an airport official said
Wednesday. The Fort Hood soldier's wife, Melissa, greeted
him in a wedding dress
and had a chaplain standing by so they could renew their wedding
vows.
Marler, who serves with the 4th Infantry Division's Bravo
Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment,
1st Brigade Combat Team, had just arrived for two weeks
of rest and recuperation leave.
The vows renewal ceremony was a first for the airport, which has
organized a team of volunteers who greet flights carrying troops
from the Middle East
every day, said Ken Capps, the airport's vice president of public
affairs. "We were very pleased to be able to work with
the couple,"
Capps said Wednesday.
More than 250,000 troops have been greeted by the Welcome Home a
Hero Campaign, the volunteers who cheer and shake hands
with the troops as they head from customs to connecting flights,
Capps said.
Marler's wife, contacted the hero campaign and told them her
idea, Capps said. "We all got so excited," Capps
said. "We just had a blast with it.
(Marler) was quite, quite shocked but in a pleasant way. We
just all jumped in to be her ad-hoc wedding planners."
Melissa Marler, 25, told The Associated Press she was
"nervous, scared" about the ceremony, which was
performed by Leslie Grounds,
a pastor who volunteers with the DFW Airport Interface
Chaplaincy.
Melissa Marler carried a bouquet of yellow roses and cried tears
of joy when she saw her husband, the AP reported.
The hero campaign arranged for the Marlers to stay at the
airport's Grand Hyatt hotel, where they received champagne and
flowers, Capps said.
The couple could not be reached for comment.
They were married July 15, 2001, and have spent
one other anniversary together. Marler, 28, was in Cuba,
Korea and Bosnia the other years,
the AP reported. They live in Killeen.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Iraqi Army Division, and Company D, 1st Bn., 22nd Infantry
Regiment,
1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, combined
their efforts and discovered five separate weapon caches

Baghdad during a cordon and search July 17.
The
caches contained a total of four 81mm mortar rounds, 15 pounds of

a 122mm pre-made explosive device, six 133mm rounds, two
helicopter rockets, five 60mm mortar rounds,
a complete 60mm mortar system, and various bomb-making materials.
This
area is known for its sectarian violence, indirect fires and
terrorist activity. The village was targeted specifically
based
on tips from brave Iraqi citizens, said 1st Lt. James
Stephen, assistant intelligence officer, 1st Bn., 22nd Inf. Regt.
The citizens are interested in a positive change within
their communities.
As
Soldiers from 1st Bn., 22nd Inf. Regt., pass the
mid-point in their year-long Operation Iraqi Freedom deployment,
the battalions focus remains on offensive operations to rid
the area of terrorists and weapon caches in western Baghdad.
In an effort to help the local Iraqi people, 3rd Bn., 3rd
Bde., 6th IAD in conjunction with 1st Bn., 22nd Inf.
Regt.,
searched all the buildings in the vicinity of the village and the
outskirts of the village, said Staff Sgt. Jason Shields,
master gunner, Co. D.
These combined offensive operations are steered at
letting the Iraqi Security Forces take the lead in what is known
as the road to a secure Iraq .
All of the weapon cache items were consolidated and destroyed by the U.S. Armys 763rd Explosives Ordnance Disposal Team.

was injured in a terrorist attack in western Baghdad July 19.
The 1-22 Inf. Regt. Soldiers were conducting
roadside bomb clearance operations when they came upon an
overturned pickup truck
with an injured man trapped inside the wreckage.
The Soldiers immediately came to his aid and freed him from the wreckage. One of the units medics attended to his wounds.
The Soldiers of 1st Platoon carried out their duties as
Soldiers, said Pfc. Brian Taylor, plans and operations,
Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st
Bn., 22nd Inf. Regt. The Iraqi gentleman stated that
his pickup truck came under small-arms fire
from the side of the highway and that one of the rounds pierced
the engine block, causing his truck to flip over.
After ensuring the man was stable, the Soldiers turned him over to the Soldiers of 3rd Bn., 3rd Bde., 6th Iraqi Army Division, for further assistance.
This deed exemplifies the motto of Task
Force 1-22;
Deeds, not Words, in that the Sapper Platoon helped
this stranded individual,
said Spc. Timothy Yingling, plans and operations specialist, HHC,
1st Bn., 22nd Inf. Regt. As the Iraqi citizens

hope from their protectors: the Iraqi army and MND-B.
In this combined partnership, it is the will of the Iraqi people
that is the force behind the search for terrorists.
