Fielden J. Huff
22nd Infantry 1905-1927
Fielden J. Huff was born in
Carroll County, Virginia on January 9, 1882, the son of Isaac
and Sarah Huff. By 1900 he and his family were living in
Hiwassee, Pulaski County, Virginia.
On March 20, 1902 Huff enlisted in the Army as a Private. His
enlistment record indicated
his civilian occupation as Miner. He had blue eyes, brown hair, a
fair complexion and
stood 5 feet 6 1/2 inches tall. He was assigned to Company K 18th
Infantry at Fort Logan,
Colorado on June 1, 1902. He deployed with the 18th Infantry to
the Philippines in April
1903 and served there until his discharge on December 18, 1904 at
Camp Downes on the
Island of Leyte. The next day he enlisted in Company B 9th
Infantry at Camp Downes and was
sent to join his Company in Peking, China where they were
stationed as the Legation Guard. He returned
to the Philippines with Company B in September 1905 where he
served until November 1905 when
he was one of 84 soldiers transferred from his Company to the
22nd Infantry also in the Philippines.
In January 1906 he was assigned to Company M 22nd Infantry.
Huff served with the 22nd Infantry for the next twenty-two years.
He was on duty with the
Regiment during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, deployed with
the 22nd Infantry to
Alaska for two years and served with the Regiment on Mexican
Border Service. He went with
the 22nd Infantry to Fort Jay, New York in 1917 and to Fort
McPherson, Georgia in 1922. He
was retired from the Army on November 7, 1927 with the rank of
Master Sergeant. His last
assignment with the 22nd Infantry was with Company L.
The 1930 Census showed him living with his parents in Hiawassie,
Pulaksi County, Virginia
with his employment status indicated as Retired Soldier. On April
28, 1933 he married
Nellie Ruth Wilson. The 1940 Census showed Huff living with his
wife and son in Hiawassie
with his employment status indicated as Retired. When he
registered for the draft in 1942
his residence was indicated as Allisonia, Pulaski County,
Virginia and his status was
indicated as "Retired from U.S. Army". He and his
family moved to Fort Myers, Florida
where he lived out his retirement.
Fielden J. Huff died after a lengthy illness at the age of 72 at
Maxwell Field Air Base
Hospital, Montgomery, Alabama on September 24, 1954 and is buried
in Dublin Cemetery,
Dublin, Pulaski County, Virginia.
