Echo Company Change of Command

August 1, 2008

 

 

On August 1, 2008, the command of E Company 1-22 Infantry
was passed from Captain Samuel Olan to Captain Michael Garling.

 

 

Captain Samuel Olan

CPT Samuel Olan is from Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico and is a graduate from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico in 2000.
  Upon graduation, CPT Olan attended the Engineer Basic Officer followed by an assignment to Fort Bragg, NC.     
CPT Olan commenced his military career in 1998 as a Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) cadet in the Puerto Rico U.S. Army National Guard.  
Upon graduation and being Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, CPT Olan was assigned to Alpha Company, 37th  Engineer Battalion
(Combat) (Airborne), 20th  Engineer Brigade at Fort Bragg, NC in June 2000.   While assigned to the 37th  Engineer Battalion,
he served as a Training Officer, Sapper Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Assistant Battalion S4.  
In April 2003, CPT Olan was attached to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during combat operations in Iraq
in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in which his unit conducted Rapid Runway Repair Operations and Cache destruction operations.
  Upon completion of the Captains Career Course, CPT Olan was assigned to HHC, 4th  Infantry Division (Mechanized)
as the Assistant Division Engineer Operations Officer in August, 2004.   In May 2005, he was then assigned to the 1st  Brigade Combat Team
where he served as an Assistant S3 and Engineer Staff Officer.     In May 2006, CPT Olan was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment
as the Task Force Engineer and assumed command of   E/1-22 IN on 1 July 2006 at Camp Liberty during Combat Operations
in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07. CPT Olan led the company through the remainder of the company’s deployment
ISO OIF 05-07, two Bradley Gunnery’s, several FTXs, NTC Rotation  07-10, and its current deployment in support of
Operation Iraqi Freedom beginning in March of 2008. CPT Olan’s civilian education includes a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration
from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico.   His military education includes graduation from the Engineer Officer’s Basic Course,
Engineer Captain’s Career Course, Combined Arms Services and Staff School, and Mechanized Leader’s Course.  
CPT Olan’s awards include the Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal (1OLC),
Army Achievement Medal (1OLC), National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary
and Service Medals, Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon.      
CPT Olan is Married to Mrs. Lisandra Olan.   CPT Olan has three children: Adriana Paola, Armando Samuel, and Carla Marie.

 

Captain Michael Garling

CPT Michael R. Garling was born 01 SEP 1978 in Albany, New York where he graduated from The State University of New York at Albany
in May 2001. In January 1996 CPT Garling enlisted into the New York National Guard as an 11C Mortar man in HHC 1-105th Infantry
in Schenectady NY.   He attended Basic Training and AIT at FT Benning, GA in June 1996.   His commitment ended in May 2001
at the rank of Corporal when he was commissioned as a 2LT from the Sienna College ROTC program. CPT Garling has been stationed at FT Lewis,
Washington; FT Leonard Wood, MO; and FT Hood, TX.   His military experience includes gunner & squad leader of an 81mm mortar section,
Sapper Platoon Leader in Operation Iraqi Freedom I with Alpha Company, 14th Combat Engineer “Rugged” Battalion in Baji, Iraq;
Company Executive Officer 14th Combat Engineer Battalion at FT Lewis, WA; G3 Iraqi Security Force Action Officer 4th Infantry Division
OIF 05-07; Division Engineer BTL CPT FT Hood TX; Assistant Brigade Engineer 1st Brigade Combat Team, FT Hood TX;
and Brigade Engineer 1st Brigade Combat Team OIF 07-08 East/West Rashid.  
His military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, The Army Commendation Medal (1OLC), the Army Achievement Medal,
Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Medal,
Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Parachutists Badge.       
CPT Garling’s military education includes Basic Training and AIT, Fort Benning, GA; Airborne School, Fort Benning GA;
Engineer Officers Basic Course, FT Leonard Wood , MO; Engineer’s Captains Career Course FT Leonard Wood, MO;  
Mechanized Leaders Course FT Benning ,GA. He has a Bachelors Degree in Sociology with a minor in History from the State University of New York
at Albany; and a Master’s of Science Degree in Geology/Geophysics from the State University of Missouri in Rolla.
CPT Garling is single and currently resides in Belton, Texas when not deployed.
