Command Sergeant Major Richard A. Beal enlisted in the Army on 23 September 1979 at his hometown of Columbus, Georgia. He entered active service on 8 January 1980 and completed Infantry One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Georgia.
He most recently served as the Command Sergeant Major for 1st Battalion (Airborne), 509th Infantry
at Fort Polk, Louisiana since October 2003.

Command Sergeant Major Beal’s other military assignments include:
machine gunner, C Co. 1st Battalion (Ranger), 75th Infantry(1980-1983);
Ranger Instructor, 3rd Ranger Company, Ft. Benning, Georgia (1983-1986);
Reconnaissance squad leader and platoon sergeant with HHC, 1st Battalion 14th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division (1986-1990); Ranger Instructor, 6th Ranger Training Brigade (1990-1993);
Platoon sergeant and First Sergeant, A Co., 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division(1993-1996);
First Sergeant, HHC, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 509th Infantry (1996-2000);
Deputy Commandant, Eighth Army Wightman NCO Academy at Camp Jackson, Republic of Korea (2000-2002);
and Operations Sergeant Major for the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 509th Infantry (2002-2003).

Command Sergeant Major Beal’s military education includes Basic and Advanced Individual Training, Basic Airborne course, Ranger School, Winter Operations Instructor Course, Pathfinder Course, Jumpmaster Course, Trainer Development Program, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Air Assault Course, Rappel Master Course, Combat Lifesaver Course,
Emergency Medical Technician Course, Master Fitness Trainer Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course,
the First Sergeant Course, and the Sergeants Major Course.

Command Sergeant Major Beal’s Awards and Decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters),
Army Commendation Medal (3 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (6 Oak Leaf Clusters), Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Overseas Service Ribbon,

Command Sergeant Major Beal and his wife Millie have two children:
Ssgt Michael G. Beal, USAF, in Osan AFB, Korea and Julie Marie Beal in Savannah, Georgia.
