1st Battalion 22nd Infantry

 

The 22nd Infantry served several years in the Philippines, a particularly grisly combat environment
which foreshadowed the Regiment's service in the latter half of the 20th century, in Vietnam.

The following illustration shows the khaki field service uniform
as worn by US Army Infantry during the years of the Philippine Insurrection, 1899-1905.

In the foreground on the left is an Infantry 1st Lieutenant.
His sidearm is the .38 caliber service revolver. He wears leather gaiters preferred by many officers.

In the foreground on the right is an Infantry Sergeant.
He wears the blue colored Mills cartridge belt and a blue
hat band on his campaign hat.

In the background are two Infantry Privates.
They are not wearing their khaki coats.
The Private on the left is shown with his "bedroll",
the standard way for an Infantryman to carry his equipment
prior to the adoption of the M1910 gear.

Standard issue service rifle to US Infantry during the Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection,
from 1892 until approximately 1903, when the model 1903 Springfield began to replace it.
